Why are many white Americans afraid to pursue careers in math and science?

Question by East Indian-American: Why are many white Americans afraid to pursue careers in math and science?
At my university, if you take a computer science, engineering, or a pre-med/med school class, the majority of the classes are indian, chinese, and japanese immigrants or children of immigrants. And you only have a small number of white americans pursuing these classes although some of they are most brilliant and geeky, out of this world smart people I have ever met.
